Sarah MacDonald's
1-to-1 Creative Field Sessions

Field Sessions with Wild West Works
One-to-one outdoor painting experiences in the wild landscapes of West Penwith, Cornwall.
These field sessions are for people who want space to explore, to experiment, and to reconnect with their practice in a calm, supportive environment.
Originally shaped to offer a safe and welcoming experience for solo travellers, these sessions continue to welcome women, LGBTQ+ creatives, and anyone seeking a quieter, more calm way of working.
Group workshops can be joyful, but they can also be noisy, creatively and mentally.
These sessions are intentionally different.
This is your time, your pace, your process.
With my full attention, we work with the landscape, the weather, and the materials, allowing things to unfold naturally, without pressure or expectation.
Whether you’re new to painting, feeling stuck, or simply craving time outdoors with your work, these sessions offer space for something to shift.
More about why Sarah believes these field sessions are so important as part of her work

Freedom Field Session
A half-day outdoor painting experience
A relaxed, one-to-one session set within the landscapes of West Penwith.
We meet in the morning and travel to a carefully chosen location that suits both you and the conditions on the day. Working outdoors, you’ll explore materials, loosen your approach, and respond to the colours, textures, and atmosphere around you.
There’s no pressure to produce a finished piece. The focus is on process, exploration, and allowing your instincts to lead.
Wild Immersion Day
A full-day creative reset in the elements
A full day to step away from expectation and sink more deeply into your practice.
We spend the day painting, walking, pausing, and reflecting, working across two carefully chosen locations within West Penwith.
This is a slower, more immersive experience. There’s space to experiment, to follow ideas further, and to build confidence in your own way of working.
Many people leave with work they’re excited to continue, but more importantly, with a renewed sense of trust in their process.

About Sarah
Sarah MacDonald is a process-led landscape painter and the founder of Wild West Works.
Originally from Australia, she moved to the UK in the 1990s and studied design and mark-making at Camberwell College of Arts. Over the years, her work has spanned graphic design, painting and decorating, running a gallery, and developing her practice as an artist.
Today, she works primarily outdoors in West Penwith, often painting from her van and responding directly to the land.
These field sessions are a natural extension of that way of working, offering a relaxed, one-to-one space where people can explore painting freely, without pressure or expectation.
Her approach is grounded, intuitive, and shaped by years of working closely with both materials and people.

Why These Sessions Matter
Over time, Sarah’s own practice has shifted away from outcomes - from what is produced, sold, or exhibited towards something more essential.
The act of painting has become less about result, and more about attention. About making space. About returning, again and again, to the experience of seeing and responding.
To witness your own process without judgement is not always easy. We live in a culture that measures value through productivity and outcome, where time spent exploring without a clear result can feel indulgent, or even uncomfortable.
And yet, this is often where the most meaningful shifts happen.
These sessions are an invitation back to that space.
A chance to slow down, to reconnect with your own rhythm, and to begin building a way of working that is led by curiosity, trust, and presence rather than expectation.
